Bacchus Wine Bar @ Jalan Doraisamy, KL

10:59:00 AM

KL is bustling with places to dine and wine, but not many with the concept in reverse. It is safe to say that there are a good amount of restaurants offering a good selection of wine, but not many are dedicated to the idea of putting their wines first. On the other hand, they are also a Spanish tapas inspired place, where pairing of tapas and wine goes hand in hand. Hence, if you're looking for such a place, then Bacchus Wine Bar may just be the place for you.

Named after the Roman God of Vine, Bacchus Wine Bar aims in providing both affordable wine for the masses, as well as a more luxurious, more refined list for the collectors.

For happy hour, starting from 3pm - 9pm daily, Bacchus Wine Bar will be having a promotion of RM25 for two (2) glasses of wine, either red or white. You've heard that right. That's like RM12.50 each!

Now what better way to enjoy those delicate glasses of wine if it isn't a series of fresh tapas? Each and every element within a dish is made freshly using high quality produce and of course, homemade sauces to compliment. It poses both value for money and taste, which are fairly rare to find these days.

Signature Pork Belly

Starting with the signature pork belly, which is braised beautifully in a light broth with no added salt. The saltiness comes naturally from the smoked pork belly, and the texture of the pork belly is extremely tender. This rich yet delicate plate of tapas certainly goes well with a glass of wine.

Garlic Prawns

Another fairly simple appetizer, fresh prawns with garlic and olive oil. A true inspiration from the Spanish Tapas Gambas Al Ajillo.

Poached Egg Pesto

Next time, a twist on the classic eggs benedict - this time, with freshly made pesto and bread crouton instead. The crown, otherwise known as the egg is not only poached to perfection, it gave the dish a sense of finesse. By cutting through it, allowing the yolk to run down was simply a sight worth filming.

The flavours worked pretty well together as you'll get the richness from the egg, starch from the croutons and flavour from the basil pesto blend. Also, not forgetting that salty edge from the aged parmesan cheese that is served on the side. Lovely!

Dory with Squid Ink

This next set of tapas may look a little bland, but I assure you, the flavours are not. Generous chunks of dory seasoned beautifully then pan-seared till the crust is crisp, served with a side of homemade squid ink sauce. A nice balance of flavour between the two, as the squid ink helps to cool the dory down, and provide it an added depth of flavour. As you might expect, this works great with a couple of sips of wine!

Chorizo

This next dish comes in two way - baked and fried. You have a slightly spicy and savoury serving of chorizo, cut in half with both done in two different ways. It is then served with a side of garlic aioli sauce and mustard. It is simple, rich and highly addictive.

3 Way Bruschetta

A simple approach with good flavours. This 3 Way Bruschetta brings out the best of both worlds - trying different things and flavour. From the front, you'll have a creamy mushroom sauce, followed by fresh tomato and finally, mango chicken at the end. It's both light and appetizing, and a great way to kick start a meal.

Salmon Namesake

Generous chunks of fresh salmon belly, lightly seared on each side while maintaining a raw interior. It is also served with a side of mash potatoes, greens and homemade wasabi mayo. The salmon is not only flaky but both crisp on the outside and soft on the inside, giving it a contrast of texture. The wasabi mayo too worked really well with this dish, as it gives a sense of Japanese infusion onto something half raw, similar to sashimi.

This is probably one of the best salmon dishes that I've in KL. A great blend of flavours and texture, alongside a good glass of wine.

Basil Pesto with Walnuts and Mushrooms (Vegetarian)

Moving on to something a bit more modest - a classic pesto pasta. Penne cooked al-dante, while the pesto sauce gives it a rich and delicate flavour - both well seasoned and cooked to perfection. In addition to that, shaved parmesan cheese, walnuts and mushroom are added to give it both flavour and some crunch - lovely!

*Thai Basil and Rocket Pesto will be coming soon.

Roast Chicken with Fruits Salsa

A healthier alternative, chicken roasted to crisp and tender perfection served with a side of fruits salsa, which comprises of watermelon, dragonfruits, mango, pineapple, kiwi and grapes. The combination may be odd but the flavours do complement each other. The rich and savoury taste of the roast chicken worked well with the sweet, light and refreshing taste of the fruits.

Overall, if you're looking for a place to drink with some food on the side, Bacchus Wine Bar is definitely the place to be. It's located in a small alley of Jalan Doraisamy, where parking is fairly difficult to find, but not impossible. Guests can choose to either sit outdoors and have a smoke, or indoors where there is air-conditioning. Service was fairly quick and the dining was certainly memorable.
