688 Korean BBQ Restaurant @ Ampang, KL

Have you ever wonder what it would be like to feast on more than just BBQ in a Korean restaurant? I'm not just talking about additional side dishes like Korean pancake or jjigae, but a series of dishes that can be considered as an individual meal. Items such as steamboat, dakgalbi and of course, a wide range of authentic Korean set meals.

At 688 BBQ, that's what they're offering. More than just a set of delicious Korean BBQ, but along with all those as well.

Starting out, you'll be given a series of Korean side dishes called banchan. They comprise of various appetizers served in small portion, each with its own unique flavour. The side dishes will also go on rotation, so you might not find the same thing you have today, any other day. But the number of side dishes remains the same. Also, free refill!

Pork marinated with curry - RM28

Marinated pork spare ribs - RM30

Gorgeous US striploin - RM78

Big Scallop - RM18

Soju infused giant scallop with a touch of butter.

Cooking those delicious slices of curry marinated pork - beautiful! If you're too lazy, they will do the BBQ for you, so just sit back, relax and enjoy the show. The flavours of the curry really comes through and eating it gives it a sense of home - similar to a pork satay. Lovely!

As for the beef, you can look at that glistening beauty of pinkiness. Cooked medium and perfectly tender, this was one of  my favourite. There are two options to the beef, either have it marinated in sauce, or go classic with salt and pepper.

That is not all, there's also this huge scallops that tasted absolutely amazing with some sake and butter. Once that is complete, the melted butter will merge with the sake, giving it a richer and sweeter profile, then soaked by the scallops themselves. Lovely! Definitely worth going for.

That is all for the BBQ section. Not to worry, there are a good variety meat, all within an affordable price range. There's also several set available, either full-on pork or beef, or perhaps a mix between two. I highly recommend you guys to try out the mix of meat as that would give a wider range of taste and texture profile to enjoy.

Up next, you've guessed it, Dakgalbi! 688 Korean BBQ also offers traditional and authentic dakgalbi, similar to Uncle Jang but a whole lot better and cheaper. The flavours are also a lot richer and spicier, giving it that edge that it requires. Generous amount of chicken and squid are provided in this order as well, as there are several others to choose from.

As I've mentioned before, they also have steamboat built right into their tables. It's actually more of a shabu-shabu thing, so it's one pot per person - which is both convenient and nice. You can choose from 3 different types of soup; Korean Seafood Soup, Spicy Soup and Miso Soup. All of which are a great base for some awesome slices of meat and vegetables.

Set menus are available for the steamboat, as well as individual order. So if you particularly like some of the items, just order them separately!

For the sides, it is recommended to go for the Samgaetang. A concoction of spring chicken, ginseng, and rice, all cooked in a murky and delicious broth. The chicken is fairly tender, despite it being a spring chicken and the soup is both sweet and savoury. Lovely!

This may look fairly boring, or outright red at first glance. But the thing is, it's packed full of flavour! The essence and richness of the kimchi comes through upon my first bite, and the pancake literally melted nicely in my mouth. It's a great pair to the BBQ and rice!

All and all, if you're a fan of Korean BBQ, steamboat, dakgalbi or simply any Korean dishes, then this is definitely the place for you. Not only is the range of BBQ fresh and premium, the flavours of marination too are delicious.

The steamboat is also pretty good, with the broth being really flavourful and the ingredients as fresh as it can get.
