Izakaya Kushi Raku Bar & Grill @ TTDI

Izakaya Kushi Raku Bar & Grill is the latest addition to the TTDI culinary market. Owned and operated by the same owner of Pickle & Fig, which might explain why they're next to each other, Izakaya Kushi Bar & Grill sets out as a modern, easy and fun place to be. Serving mostly skewered items and of course, a range of awesome beers and liquor.

Izakaya Kushi Raku Bar & Grill is one of the few cafe/bar/restaurant that offers draft Kirin Ichiban (RM22).

They also offer quite a unique tasting Sparkling Sake (RM40) that is said to be a good companion to the grilled skewers.

For the sake of quality and taste, the owner Ken normally does the grilling himself, with the head chef stepping in occasionally.

Chuka Sazae Niku - RM9

Believe it or not, this is actually snail meat. Marinated and prepared in a similar method like the cuttlefish available in most Japanese restaurants. Quite odd but definite had flavour.

Eihire (Skate Fin) - RM10

I actually do not know what this is, but I do not its salty and goes perfectly with a pint of Kirin Ichiban Beer. It felt and tasted a lot like cuttlefish to me but I may be wrong.

Chicken Wings (Salt) - RM7 per stick

The first skewered dish I had was the chicken wings. Grilled beautifully on the outside with salt, making the skin extra crispy and flavourful. The chicken wings were really fresh as the bones were white. Juicy, tender and retained all its natural juices. Absolutely delightful.

Pork Meat Ball - RM6 per stick

Simple, juicy and sweet balls. Pork balls to be exact. Flavours were spot on with the porkiness being the star of the stick along with a nice sweet glaze. It's a nice balance between sweet and savoury.

Cherry Tomato - RM4 per stick

It may not look like much but it certainly did taste good. 5 pieces of cherry tomato skewed together, sprinkled with salt and grilled to perfection. Slightly salty at the beginning and finish with a tangy and watery burst.

Pork Belly - RM16 per stick

Aside from the chicken wings, I too really liked the pork belly stick. It was tender, juicy, fat and packed with natural sweetness and flavour. The pork belly was also glazed with a sweet sauce, accompanying the grilling to perfection.

Bacon Wrap Rice - RM6 per stick

This was actually my least favourite - due to the rice in the middle. I felt that it lacked depth and flavour, apart from simply bacon and rice. Perhaps a little more sauce or vegetables might help in terms of layering the flavour and texture.

Beef Ribeye - RM11 per stick

Juicy, mouth-watering, and tender! The only thing missing was perhaps a proper spread of salt and pepper as I felt some parts of it were deprived. But aside from that, absolutely delicious. Well cooked (well-done but still pretty good) and fresh.

Ebi Tempura - RM22

Aside from skewered dishes, they also offer some main courses which includes this plate of tempura. Lightly battered (though I still felt that it was quite thick) and fried beautifully crisp. The prawns were fresh and the batter didn't reek of a dirty-oil stench.

Clear Soup Udon - RM12

They also offer clear soup udon, in which it was nicely cooked but a tad bit too simple. Didn't really liked it as I felt that it was effortless.

In short, I felt that Izakaya Kushi Raku excels in preparing skewer or basically "kushi" dishes. They were all grilled to juicy perfection and were also well marinated and seasoned (with some exceptions). Apart from that, the place itself was also pretty relax and calm, even though it was bright outside, the restaurant was quite dark.

Order with any pint of draft beers or imported Japanese alcohol and I'm quite certain that you will enjoy it. Though in all honesty, it will not be the most affordable meal that you'll have. But overall, it was delicious!
