798 Shabu Shabu @ Sunway Pyramid

11:44:00 PM

Thanks to Foodirector, other wise known as NomsterAds, we finally got the chance to try this shabu shabu 1 month after its opening. The reason why its called 798 Shabu Shabu is because they have 7 types of meat, 9 types soup and 8 types of sauce. This is by far the only restaurant that provides such a variety.

The entrance. It is located on the outer side of pyramid, not inside. It's right infront of Xia Mian Guan.

Our dear Jackson.

The 8 types of sauce which includes : Dark Soy Sauce, Peanut Sesame Sauce, Chili Oil Sauce, Sour & Spicy Sauce, Green Spicy Sauce, Thai "2S" Sauce and Beancurd Sauce.

I only have photos of 2 types of soup. Pork Bone Clear soup and Tom Yam soup. The other 7 types are Bak Kut Teh soup, Spicy soup, Kimchi soup, Miso soup, Wintermelon soup, Pepper soup and Herbal soup.

The 7 types of meat includes: Beef, Chicken, Lamb, Deer, Pork, Dori Fish, Abalone slices and Venison slices. All of which are really fresh and thinly sliced.

Counters of vegetables! Plenty of freshly served vegetables, fishballs, crabsticks etc.

All the mushroom goodness

Tiny sausages, fishball, eggs, udon noodles, meatballs and everything else.

Spinach noodles with other fresh ingredients.

Ice cream choices: Chocolate, Vanila and Mixed

Drinks available: Lemon Tea, Lime Juice, Waterchestnut and Herbal Tea.

Firstly, I would like to say that I appreciate the varieties of soup, meat and sauces. This is something that I believe no other shabu-shabu has done. Furthermore, I would also like to point out that the meat was really fresh, consistently sliced and well portioned. However, the only issue I had was the soup. It was bland, almost tasteless.

The Tomyam soup which I tried was just spicy, it had no sourness or anything else. The Wintermelon soup only gets better as you keep cooking different variant of ingredients together. Having said that, the soup was still not quite there. Pork Bone Clear soup had no sense of Pork Bone, felt like it was just clear chicken stock soup. Herbal soup was pretty disappointing as well. I've yet to tried the other 5 soups because they were unavailable on that day.

The sauce wasn't exactly something new to me, but its nice to see a restaurant having such varieties of sauces. Anyway, I really liked the Green Chili. It was spicy and tangy at the same time. Wasn't a fan of the other sauces but apparently, I was supposed to mix and match different sauces together to create a whole new flavour. But I couldn't do it, it was just too much for me.

Having said that, the choices of vegetables, fishballs, meatballs, crabstick, noodles were all very good. Not to mention they were also very fresh. Their drinks menu were pretty good as well. I personally loved the Waterchestnut drink. One last issue was the ice cream. They were horribly diluted. If only they were to change to a different supplier or perhaps recipe, it could be much much better.

Seafood are currently still unavailable due to the difficulty of maintaining freshness and price. However, there will be new upcoming menu/ingredients to the restaurant in the near future.

Overall, I believe the price are pretty standard. I personally think if only they were to improve the soup, just the soup, their business would be fantastic. However it may seem, I would really want to express my gratitude to the owners of 798 Shabu Shabu for this hangout. I may have hated the soup but I truly believe that they will improve it and one day, I will return to try again.
