Life Cafe @ Cheras

8:00:00 AM

Being born in KL and moved Subang, then Shah Alam, it was almost impossible for me to visit the Cheras district. Most of what I need could be found within town so there wasn't really any reason for me to drive all the way down to Cheras.

Having said that, its not like I'm totally alienated by the place. I do visit Connaught night market once every 2 or 3 months. On some Sundays, I do drop by Cheras for lunch at Sun Ming Restaurant, which serves one of my favourite roast ducks.

Now, there is a restaurant, that serves a variety of slow-cooked soups which I do quite enjoy....

Life Cafe - Entrance
With its fancy-looking traditional facade, its hard to miss when passing-by. Located right next to Leisure mall, along one of the shophouses.

Started off with some Taiwanese drinks. I don't know why, but whenever I see edible black pearls, I would automatically associate them with the Taiwanese culture.

1. Ginseng Chicken Soup and Red Dates - RM9.50

2. Ten Treasure Chicken Herbal Soup - RM12.50

3. Traditional Chicken Soup with Lotus Roots - RM9.50

4. Chicken Soup with Goya Melon and Pineapple - RM9.50

 5. Stew Mutton with Medlar Herbs - RM9.90

6. Eight Treasure Chicken Soup - RM9.90

7. Black Bean Chicken Soup - RM9.90

8. Mushroom Peanut Soup - RM9.50

A total of 8 types of soup have been tasted that night. I thought my tongue might go crazy, tasting such a variety. All of them tasted really good - both rich and has a depth of flavour. However, the 5. Stew Mutton with Medlar Herbs was by far my favourite. It was rich with the essence of mutton, although some argue that it was bad but I really did enjoyed it.

Life's Spicy Wanton - RM8.90

This wasn't as great as the soup. The skin was soggy and overly spicy. The additional fried onion didn't really worked. Basically, the entire combination was pretty bad.

Traditional Homemade Meat Roll - RM7.50

This wasn't so bad. A little dry but has decent flavours.

Poached and Fried Chicken Dumplings - RM7.50 each

Both were relatively okay although I did prefer the fried version more, due to its added crispiness. Filling-wise, I think there was a little too much coriander for me to accept. Some soy sauce would help mask it.

Curry Chicken set - RM14.50
Beef  Stew set - RM14.50
Lamb Special - RM15.90

Set comes either in rice or vermicelli and a bowl of soup.

Generally, they were all pretty okay - rich and full of flavour. The price was rather reasonable as well. I wouldn't recommend the rice though, it was a little too dry. The vermicelli on the other hand was pretty good. Soft, springy and elastic.

Among the 3, my favourite would definitely be the lamb special. Although the beef stew was pretty good as well.

In conclusion, I would say Life Cafe is excellent with its soup. Their set meals were pretty okay too, since it was at an affordable range for dinner. Their desserts however, has not much to talk about - just bad. Wouldn't bother ordering it. Stick with their soups instead, its good.
