Kontiki @ The Federal Hotel, Kuala Lumpur

11:09:00 AM

This place brings back so much memories as a child. Ever since I was studying in a Chinese school located in KL, or more precisely Jalan Merpati, my mother has always brought me to different hotels in KL for a buffet dinner after school. One of them was the Federal Hotel.

After many years, I've finally returned. Not knowing that they had also renovated. Seeing as I almost forgot how it appears to be many years ago, I entered anxiously, praying that one of my favourite thing about Kontiki remains.

The entrance with two weird looking totem.

What inside wasn't a luxury-styled or modern looking decor but a more rustic, humble and laid back atmosphere. Not saying that it was completely old school as there was several hint of modernity.

What is it that favors me the most? The fresh prawns of course! I used to have plates after plates of this - hopefully not increasing my cholesterol. Each plate will have at least 20 to 25 pieces of prawns. Yes, I was once a greedy kid for prawns. Served with thousand island and Tobasco sauce.

Besides my prawns, they do serve a variety of other seafood as well - crabs, tiny lobsters, mussels, clamps, scallop etc.

A palette of various cheese.

Another addition to my favourites, smoked duck.

Rojak

Thai Salad

There was even this lovely lady who helped prepare some additional salads.

BBQ Station - only available on Tiki BBQ Buffet; more details at the end of the post.

Onto the main course, a rack of lamb!

Grilled fish!

and roasted chicken! Within this vicinity, there were also various grilled squid, chicken and beef - all marinated. Occasionally, there will also be Wagyu Beef available.

Here in the central island, aside from the fresh seafood, salad and Japanese sushi, there is also a range of colourful desserts.

Not to mention fruits as well.

Rice, soups, sauces, curry and even Peking Duck are available! And to be honest, the chicken soup was really good. Had several bowls that night.

Overall, most of what I had was pretty good, especially the prawns! The variety and spread of the buffet was quite satisfying as well. I would personally recommend the chicken soup, which was well balanced in flavour and herbs. The fresh prawns - a definite must try. Smoked duck and salads were pretty good as well, although not the best but it works fairly well.

The only slight hiccup which I find a little disturbing was the rack of lamb meat. It was way overcooked and the meat was tough. The only thing that acceptable was the freshly grilled skewers and satay. The desserts as well were a little too sweet for my liking. Despite that, I loved the spread of fresh fruits which includes Kiwi and dragon fruit. The ice cream however was fairly melted, which seem alot like double cream in a pot - unfortunately.

But then again, I would still place Kontiki in my top 10 buffet places in KL.
