Yu Yi Bak Kut Teh @ Jalan Imbi

8:00:00 AM

Another MakanVenture gathering by OpenRice and this time, its a Bak Kut Teh restaurant located in the infamous Jalan Imbi. I haven't had Bak Kut Teh in quite a long time so this particular MakanVenture was a must go for me. And as always, I've brought Pig along. Oh, one more thing, this restaurant has been running for more than 30 years, that is heck of a long time.

The main entrance. It is right infront of the road.

Hakka Yong Tau Foo (Stuffed Vegetables & Tofu)

I personally love Yong Tau Foo, especially crispy fried beancurd and stuffed eggplant. This plate of awesomely fried beancurd, fried tofu, stuffed eggplants and stuffed chili along with some gravy was amazing. Loved the flavours.

Long Bean Rice

I have no idea why is it called the Green Pea Rice but apparently there was long beans involved when cooking. However bland it may look, the flavour of the rice was phenomenal. Love the smokey flavour and the overall texture of the rice.

Claypot Bak Kut Teh

Another restaurant serving my favourite type of Bak Kut Teh, served in claypot. I personally feel that if something is cooked with a claypot, the flavours and aroma gets enhanced as well. Filled with various types of pork cuts including ribs, belly and lean meat, this bowl of heavenly scented and well seasoned claypot Bak Kut Teh was really good. However, it may be slightly mild compared to those from Klang.

Yu Yi Signature Pot

A slightly herbal-lier version of the Bak Kut Teh. Good tender cuts of pork with adequate fat layers and packed full of flavour. The only issue I had was the Parsley. I hate Parsley. They're extremely smelly to me. But besides that, I love the soup!

Stir Fried Kangkung with Belacan

Pretty straight forward. Stir fried Kangkung with some Belacan; flavourful, a little salty and spicy. Goes extremely well with white rice.

Pork Stomach in Pepper Soup

I get why its called a pepper soup; excessive use of pepper and black pepper for the soup. The results was a powerful kick of pepper-ness right from your nose to throat. If anyone is having flu, this would cure it instantly.

Steamed Fish with Minced Ginger

Yes, before this was excessive pepper, now its ginger. The fish was flooded with chopped and minced ginger; it smells deadly. I hate ginger so I scrapped off all the ginger and aimed only the meat. It was thick, chunky, smooth and best of all, doesn't have that fishy-taste or smell.

"Drunken" Chicken in Chinese Yellow Wine

To our surprise, there was an additional egg on top of the soup; normally it would be egg-less.  However, again, I do not fancy Chinese Yellow Wine as it tastes really weird in a way. But according to some of them, they said it wasn't strong enough. They wish there was more alcohol flavour to it. In my opinion, I couldn't stand it.

Stir Fried Beef (I can't remember exactly what its called since this wasn't part of the menu)

A pretty common dish, great salty flavours with slightly-hard-to-chew meat. I don't quite fancy it as it was alright. Its good but not really to my liking.

The owner and Miss Burung Hantu. A gift from OpenRice.
