Taste by Champignons @ EKO MALL, Cheras

6:07:00 PM

There ain't doubt that Cheras is definitely a place with an abundance of restaurants and kopitiam. However, finding a place for a decent steak seems more of a challenge than getting all A's for SPM. Anywho, with the introduction of the latest Brutalism-Architecture (or some may just call it incomplete) mall by the name of EKO CHERAS, there might just be one that is up for the task.

Going by the name of "Taste by Champignons", this simple yet fairly modern-looking restaurant offers some of the best western dishes around town. Ranging from their humble pastas to their luxurious Australian Grain-fed Striploin steak.

Australian Grain-fed Striploin Steak - RM45

Kicking things off strong with their beef. A simple cut serving of Australian Striploin steak seasoned beautifully and cooked to a wondrous pink. It's a simple dish that highlights the quality of meat, served with your choice of 2 sides.

Undeniably beautiful - perfectly cooked. Here I have a side of salad with a homemade vinaigrette dressing and a bowl of chips. No sauce on the steak although there are options to. I prefer mine simply with salt and pepper.

Just look at that char on the crust.

For a price of RM45 - I think it's definitely one of the cheapest steak in town that still retains its qualities.

Smoked Bacon and Mushroom Pizza - RM20

Taste by Champignons also offers a limited selection (precisely 4 at the moment) of pizzas, all made from scratch. Here I had the simplest option - mushroom and bacon on tomato sauce with cheese. It's a thin crust pizza and I felt that the toppings were fairly generous.

Works great as an appetizer to share among the table.

Squid Ink Pasta with Market Seafood - RM38

Definitely the more expensive of the pastas, but I'd think it's worth the extra. Squid Ink pasta is made inhouse, which gives it that really nice firm yet tender bite to the pasta itself. topped with cherry tomatoes, button mushrooms, parmesan cheese, basil and a selection of seafood medley, this pasta will certainly satisfy most pasta lovers.

In a word - it's simplicity done right.

Signature Club Sandwich - RM18

A simple club sandwich with the expected ingredients within. Eggs, chicken leg, streaky bacon, lettice, tomatoes, avocado and cheese. It's quite nice really, and for 18 bucks, I think it's a fair price for its portion.

The Champignons wouldn't be complete without their very own signature desserts. Spearheaded by Chef Gary Chang and Pastry Chef Kingsley Kwoh who were trained from an award-winning French Dining restaurant. These 2 are set to create some of the fanciest and most finiest French Patisserie & Desserts at an affordable price for all to try.

It certainly does look absolutely stunning.

Beautiful yet incredibly difficult to master, these desserts are the tip of the iceberg of what is being offered at Taste by Champignons.

Each and every dessert has a story to tell, with unexpecting flavours hidden within.

Can't say no to macarons now can we?

Some of what we had were their signature items:

Elderflower - Elderflower Mousse with Guava Compote, filled with Strawberry & Pink Guava Jelly and sat on a bed of Vanilla genoise and Biscuit. A light and tarty little dessert.

Chocolate Hazelnut - Definitely a family favourite. The sweet balance of Dark Chocolate Mousse and Chocolate Sponge creates this really nice 'Kinder Beuno' sort of flavour. Kids will definitely love it.

Cherry - Though it looks like an apple (which is honestly my first thought), it's a concoction of Dark Chocolate Mousse with Chantilly Cream, Cherry Compote on Chocolate Sponge, sitting on a bed of Brunch Biscuit & Base.

The men behind these desserts!

All and all, Taste by Champignons is a great place for a quality meal that will not pierce a hole through your wallet. Food are done well, with no added drama.  Simple simple whole foods that everyone can enjoy.

Desserts are certainly something to talk about, and for sweet-toothers out there, do give them a try.
